Swimming the Extra Mile
In the 1950’s – 1960’s the American Red Cross had a swimming program “Swim Stay Fit 50 miles” where a swimmer could swim 50 miles and receive a pin or patch to show their accomplishment. Bob started swimming for his 50 mile pin in the 1960’s and was almost finished but then he got a call to serve his country. Bob retired from the Army Special Forces (SOCOM) G3 in 1991 after 24 years of service. He is 3 years post heart attack and 1 year since spinal surgery. In April of this year 2015 he has started working on completing his 50 miles of swimming here at the Jones Y pool. “The YMCA members motivate me to continue improving, while the pool and indoor track give me the year-round opportunity to do so. My thanks to the staff and members for their assistance,” said Bob.
