Camp Wakonda's lake dedicated
May 6, 2016 was a great day at Camp Wakonda with the dedication of the new lake. This lake project was made possible through the combined donation of Ryan & Brandi O’Reilly and the YMCA of the USA.
Campers will now not only be able to participate in canoeing, kayaking and fishing as they have done in the past but will now also be able to enjoy swimming, water trampolining, blobbing and fly fishing.
The cost of the entire project was $186,815 which included the timber removal, excavation, dam construction and the aeration system. The timber was harvested by Custom Timber Harvesting from Mt Vernon, MO, some of which will be used to side the old pool house/new nature center. Much of the rest of the wood was cut by the Christian County Emergency Management Team and handed out as firewood to those in need during this past winter. Lafollette Excavation from Strafford created the lake and constructed the dam working closely with soil scientist Tom DeWitt and the Corps of Engineers. It took Lafollette’s crew of four, 3 months to move the tons of dirt from the lake hillside to create the new dam.
The dock system was provided by EZ-Dock from Monett. They were able to transport and install in one morning, doing an amazing job.Still to be installed is a solar aeration system provided by Living Water Aeration. This will help circulate the water and keep it at a constant temperature minimizing algae growth.
