Silver Sneakers: Still Going Strong
Ninety-two-year-old Alice Montagno is not afraid to try new things. Two years ago she started coming to the Y’s Silver Sneakers Muscular Strength & Range of Movement classes three days a week. She says she loves the class, loves to move and enjoys the workout and loves the feeling she gets after class.
The Ozark Mountain Family YMCA has offered Silver Sneakers classes for 10 years. This 45-minute class is designed to increase strength, range of movement, agility, balance and coordination to improve participants’ functional capacities, physical fitness and sense of well-being. These unintimidating classes are appropriate for individuals who are fit and active, as well as those who are sedentary, unfamiliar with exercise or are entering post-rehabilitation programs.
Want to come? Expect to use hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball for resistance. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support. The Y provides all class equipment!
YMCA Wellness Director Monica Morris says she is inspired by this class. “The members are amazing. I have witnessed so many miracles in this class!” Monica says she has seenclass participants get off medicine, improve range of motion and has even seen the positive changes in attitude that can come about from socializing in such a positive environment. Some even come in early to walk the gym before class starts!
“I cherish every story they share with me!” Monica said. As for Alice? When she’s not at the Y, you can find her riding a jet ski with her son, or swimming in the lake, thanks to her clean bill of health.
