Standing Strong On Our Core Values

Years ago when I first came to the Pat Jones YMCA as a fitness instructor and personal trainer, it didn’t take long for me to understand why everyone kept saying, “The Y is more than a gym.” Every day I see more ways the people in the Y community help each other and truly model social responsibility.

We could put a formal definition on the phrase, saying social responsibility is “an ethical framework suggesting than an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large.” But what does that mean in layman’s terms? It means we give back to our community.

For all the fun we have at the Pat Jones YMCA, we take social responsibility very seriously. Throughout the year, our different fundraising events and campaigns are not taken lightly. Every single contribution is valued. Every gift makes an impact.

Money raised through these events helps parents navigate work and childcare, gives financial assistance that help families have a place to get healthy, provides camps for kids to have a fun and safe environment for the summer, and ensures more kids have access to sports programs that teach what it means to be part of a team.

Social responsibility isn’t just about raising money; it’s also about safety for every person in every program we offer. At our recent Aquaplooza event at the Monett Area YMCA, all lifeguards throughout the Ozarks Regional YMCA participated in a special hands-on training event. Lifeguards brush up on guard readiness, swim tests, scanning the water, spinal board procedures, CPR and drowning recognition.

Social responsibility is a huge part of the Y’s mission. We proudly talk about it not just with our members, but with our larger community. Help us spread the word!
